Success Story:
English for Speakers of Other Languages/ESOL

Name: Nipa MacGregor
Program: Adult English Literacy/ESOL
Graduation Date: November 2008
Current Employer and Job Title: Employer/Job Title

Nipa MacGregor came to the United States in 1974 as a young bride from Thailand. She had had no formal education in her country and spoke no English. Because of her intelligence and personality, she learned to speak English and made a good life for herself. It was always her goal, however, to become an American citizen. Knowing how to speak English is not enough to pass an interview with immigration authorities, so she came to Winter Park Tech to improve her speaking skills, learn to read and write, and study for the interview. After about a year of attending ESOL and citizenship classes for 6 hours a day and diligently studying, she passed her interview. On October 15th of this year, Nipa became an American citizen. She is excited about having her new passport, voting for the first time, and realizing all the advantages and responsibilities of American citizenship.
