Foundation for Winter Park Tech, Inc.
01.24.06

The Digital Design class has been very busy working on a project for the inaugural event of the new Foundation for Winter Park Tech, Inc. The Foundation for Winter Park Tech, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that raises money to help prospective students of all ages who would not otherwise be able to attend Winter Park Tech. The Foundation can help with such things as tuition, books and childcare.

Digital Design students have been designing logos, letterheads, envelopes, invitations, and brochures. Monette Martir, the project manager, presented the layout designs to the Foundation board members who are composed of professionals in the greater Winter Park area. The presentation was a huge success. The combination of Monette’s presentation abilities, the skills of the five student designers (Monette Martir, Rob Bolam, Richard Buchanan, Chris Smart and Chris Wright), and with the help of Cody Lemonakis, who provided mat boards, created a very professional presentation. The members of the Foundation board were very impressed with all the layouts and made their final picks, choosing the designs of Monette and Rob. Congratulations!

When asked how they felt about working on this project, the team members said, "This is the kind of project that makes you feel good about all the time and hard work you put into it. Just knowing that one day your work will help someone get the opportunity to attend Winter Park Tech makes us feel great!"

Winter Park Tech Health Science Department Begins Tradition
11.18.05

The Health Science department here at Winter Park Tech, which includes the Coder/Biller, Transcription, and the Medical Assisting programs, held its first PRAISE awards ceremony on November 18, 2005.

PRAISE, which stands for Professional Recognition for Achievement in Interdepartmental Student Excellence, honors those students in the health-related programs who have met certain criteria set forth by the program instructors. Those criteria include perfect attendance, maintaining a 90% or higher grade average, as well as being recommended for inclusion in the National Technical Honor Society.

This nine-week’s awards ceremony honored 26 students from all of the programs, including those students who are Dual Enrollment (high school juniors and seniors who attend one of the health programs on a part-time basis).

Attendees at this semester’s ceremony representing the administration of Winter Park Tech, included Diane Culpepper, Senior Director, and Betty Jones, Assistant Director, as well as each of the program instructors; Debbie Wolfe, Medical Transcribing; Peggy Black, Biller/Coder; Melinda Gioielli, Kim Kochara, and Diane Raspotnik, Medical Assisting; Twanda Jacobs and Rebecca Long, Dual Enrollment Medical Assisting.

Refreshments and cake followed the presentation of the awards. Plans are underway for the next ceremony which will honor those students who meet the criteria for the October to December 2005 session.

ESOL Fall Festival
10.31.05

On October 31, 2005, the ESOL students celebrated fall by participating in a scavenger hunt. Ten teams were formed and the race was on for first, second, and third place winners. Many of the faculty, staff, and administrators opened their doors and helped the ESOL students gather items on the scavenger hunt list. After 30 minutes, time was up, and all three teams were awarded prizes. Also a jar of candy was awarded to the student who guessed the correct amount of candy pieces in the container. The Fall Festival continued with food, fun, and certificates. Each student who earned a Literacy Completion Point was awarded a certificate. The celebration was a success and the students look forward to next year’s festival.

Thanks to all who helped make this fun event a success!
